In Writing

Since 1999, I have covered the NFL as a writer and editor for various outlets, including:

  • NFL.com, 1999-2002, when it was administered by ESPN.com and CBSSportsLine.com;
  • DenverBroncos.com, the official site of the Denver Broncos, 2002-08 and 2013-present;
  • Panthers.com, the official site of the Carolina Panthers, 2008-10;
  • MaxDenver.com, a site I ran independently, 2010-12;
  • CBSSports.com, 2012-13;
  • The Sports Xchange, 2012-present.

In addition to those assignments, I have worked as a free-lance correspondent primarily covering the Broncos. My clients have included:

  • The New York Times
  • The Sporting News
  • Lindy’s Pro Football Annual

Work samples:

March 14, 2012 (The New York Times) — Pre-game feature: The Harvard of the South Meets the Vanderbilt of the North

March 20, 2012 (The New York Times) — News Recap: Broncos’ Soft-Sell Approach Helped Manning Make His Hard Decision

Oct. 29, 2009 (Panthers.com) — Recapping a bad loss for a team site: Panthers Give It Away Against Bills

On team sites, you learn how to write for defeats. How do you be honest without getting people in the building too angry? I’ve had plenty of experience walking this balance beam: writing a story that doesn’t insult fans’ intelligence while also being sensitive to internal concerns.
