Breaking Down the Season to Come

Now that organized team activities are complete, I look ahead to the coming regular season with a series of previews of Broncos opponents that will run from late June to early July:

DE Quanterus Smith Takes Tutelage from Pro Bowlers

After spending his rookie campaign on the injured reserve list, pass rusher Quanterus Smith is learning from Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware in preparation for the 2014 season.

My Takeaways from Broncos OTAs

What did we see and learn from the Broncos’ organized team activities? I wrote some pieces on each of the practices that were open to the public, sharing my notes and thoughts from each session:

Orlando Franklin, on Moving to LG

Four seasons into his NFL career, Orlando Franklin is on the move from right tackle to left guard. After some initial disappointment, he’s accepted his new role and is getting down to work.

Denver Broncos Team Report

In my latest Broncos team report for The Sports Xchange, I break down the team’s 2014 NFL Draft class, focusing on first-rounder Bradley Roby:

A cornerback of Bradley Roby’s measurables and skill set is not typically going to be available with the No. 31 overall pick.

Yet that is where the Denver Broncos selected the Ohio State defensive back in the NFL Draft Thursday. Roby slipped that low because of the issues that surrounded him.

There was an April 20 arrest for operating a vehicle while impaired, which stemmed from police finding him in a parked car and smelling alcohol. He was also charged with disorderly conduct last July for an incident that involved a bar fight, but that charge was dismissed.

In a deep draft where hundredths of a second separate first- from second-rounders, these issues were enough to move the Buckeye defender down the board to where the Broncos could stand pat and take him with the next-to-last selection of the first round.

Covering the Draft

During the three days of the draft, I wrote quick breakdowns of each Broncos pick and assessed where each would fit in the lineup, both short- and long-term. I used my knowledge of the roster, contracts and the Broncos’ future salary-cap situation to detail the future plans for each.

• Round 1: CB Bradley Roby
• Round 2: WR Cody Latimer
• Round 3: OT/G Michael Schofield
• Round 5: MLB/WLB Lamin Barrow
• Round 6: C Max Paradis
• Round 7: WLB Corey Nelson

Mingo, Upchurch to the Ring of Fame

The three-man 2014 class to the Denver Broncos’ Ring of Fame includes two special teamers who should have been inducted long ago, and the first head coach to ever join the Broncos’ most exclusive club.

I focused on the players: Gene Mingo and Rick Upchurch. Their upcoming induction reveals what we’ve learned about important on-field contributions in the sport, particularly in the often-overlooked third phase.

Broncos Position Breakdown: Special Teams

Since kicker, punter and long snapper are obviously not needs, I combined the articles I would write about special-teamers this week into one piece. In it, I focus on some late-round returners. North Texas’ Brelan Chancellor and Fresno State’s Isaiah Burse would not surprise me as seventh-rounders.

Broncos’ Draft Wide Open

As I’ve found, it’s difficult to gauge what will happen when the Broncos go on the clock with the No. 31 pick in the first round. There are too many variables between the Texans’ slot atop the draft and 49ers’ position, one above the Broncos.

Mason’s Mock, Version 8.0

The good thing about writing a mock draft for the official site of a team drafting No. 31 in the first round is that changes are inevitable. Most weeks, I’ve had a different choice for the Broncos than the last.

This week, I projected Virginia Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller to the Broncos.
